Vinegar Wine
(5)
First I filled up your glass and then you filled up mine
As we emptied that bottle of bargain bin wine.
And the words that had stuck in our throats were set free
Like boats that had all run aground and now rushed to the sea.
I should have known from the start it would end up this way
We were drunk on each other most every day.
But that wine turned to vinegar when you turned away
Holding that bottle instead of me and drifting away.
And it's got to be one of the greatest crimes
To lose love after making love a thousand times.
Fill my cup with vinegar wine.
Drink it up, vinegar wine.
Oh, I made you my husband, you made me your wife
And I swore to stand by you the rest of my life.
But that wine turned to vinegar and I turned away.
They can make wine from water they say, but vinegar stays.
And it's got to be one of the greatest crimes
To lose love after making love a thousand times.
Fill my cup with vinegar wine.
Drink it up, vinegar wine.
